mil

Latest Updated:11/01/2006

Question:

mil

Answer:

"Mil" is a unit of length used by the military standards of the US Department of Defense and indicates 1/1000 inch. For example, 300 mils is 7.62 mm (= 300 × 25.4/1000).
In the past, it was used to indicate the width of semiconductor device packages, such as DIPs and SOPs. Currently, however, it has been replaced by mm after enforcement of metric system. Expression such as "7.62 mm (300)" may be found on the package drawing of Renesas Electronics products. This is because consideration is given to those who are accustomed to using mils.
